University of Nicosia Medical School to host Nikos Ioannou Memorial Lecture honoring healthcare pioneer
The University of Nicosia Medical School is establishing the Nikos Ioannou Memorial Lecture to honor the late Dr Nikos Ioannou, a respected orthopaedic surgeon and key figure in advancing healthcare in Cyprus. The inaugural event will take place on October 5, 2026, at 18:00 in Discovery Hall at the University of Nicosia.
The lecture, titled “The Rise and Fall of Liver Cancer,” will be delivered by Professor George N. Ioannou, Dr Ioannou’s son and a leading hepatology expert in the United States. It will focus on the evolving understanding, prevention, and modern management of liver cancer. Dr Nikos Ioannou notably contributed to Cyprus’s healthcare sector as President of the Pancyprian Medical Association and as the first President of the Health Insurance Organisation, playing a vital role in developing the General Healthcare System (GeSY).
Supported by the Ioannou family, the memorial lecture aims to preserve Dr Ioannou’s legacy and impact on medicine and healthcare leadership. A reception will follow the lecture, and interested attendees are encouraged to register in advance.
