Milenko Stevanović's 'Closely Observed' Portrait Exhibition Opens at Toto Gallery in Nicosia

Milenko Stevanović's second solo exhibition in Nicosia, titled "Closely Observed," is currently on display at Toto Gallery until October 15. The show features stone lithographs, watercolours, paintings, and charcoal drawings of people the Serbian artist has met since moving to Cyprus, including portraits of his mother and dog.

The series explores Stevanović’s fascination with human subjects stripped of background clutter, focusing purely on the individual against simple colored backdrops. Inspired initially by a museum sculpture in Cyprus, the artist spent several years observing and sketching locals in neighborhoods like Ayioi Omoloyites and old Nicosia, often spending dozens of hours with his subjects to capture detailed, lifelike portraits.

Alongside the exhibition, public events include a talk on September 24 and a guided tour with one of the models on October 2, inviting visitors to engage directly with the art and the artist. Presented by Alternative Brains Rule and curated by Constantinos Kyprianou, the exhibition reflects Milenko’s contemplative approach to portraiture and his evolving relationship with Cyprus.
