AKEL warns Cyprus against British military use of Akrotiri base amid Middle East conflict

AKEL has strongly criticised the British government's decision to use the Akrotiri base in Cyprus for a military support mission to Saudi Arabia, warning that it draws Cyprus into Middle East conflicts and increases risks to the country and its people. The party condemned the British bases as a colonial legacy and a constant source of danger to Cyprus.

The British Ministry of Defence confirmed that a Voyager aircraft based at RAF Akrotiri will provide air-to-air refuelling support to Saudi Arabia amid ongoing Houthi attacks. This move follows recent drone attacks on the Akrotiri base, including an Iranian-made drone that caused minor damage in March 2026. Cyprus's president and foreign minister have linked the drone attacks to regional tensions.

AKEL has called on the Cypriot government, led by Nikos Christodoulides, to oppose the use of British bases in regional armed conflicts and to take all necessary steps to prevent Cyprus from being exposed to further risk due to the bases’ involvement. The British base at Akrotiri remains a strategic hub for UK military operations in the Middle East.
