Cyprus Paraplegics Organisation urges update on healthcare accessibility recommendations

The Cyprus Paraplegics Organisation (OPAK) has requested an update from the Ombudswoman regarding the implementation of a binding 2023 recommendation aimed at improving accessibility in health services. Despite commitments made by the Health Insurance Organisation (HIO) and the Health Ministry, patients with disabilities continue to encounter clinics and hospitals that are difficult and sometimes unsafe to access.

OPAK highlighted ongoing issues such as inadequate parking for disabled patients, examination beds that cannot be adjusted in height, and lifts too small to accommodate electric wheelchairs. These barriers restrict patients' choice of doctors, forcing them to prioritize accessibility over medical needs. The Cyprus Federation of Patients’ Associations (CyFPA) echoed these concerns, confirming continued violations of equal access rights.

The Ombudswoman's July 2023 recommendation called for clear accessibility criteria for health service providers and tighter licensing rules linked to compliance. However, progress has been limited, with some legislation delayed and key aspects for clinics and dental clinics still pending. OPAK’s letter asks for clarification on the status and timelines of these reforms to ensure effective protection of the rights of people with disabilities.
