Cyprus sees largest fall in tourist accommodation nights in EU during H1 2026

Cyprus recorded the largest decline in tourist accommodation nights in the EU during the first half of 2026, dropping 7.71% year-on-year, according to Eurostat data analyzed by Destination Finder. Tourist arrivals to the island fell 10.1% to around 1.66 million for the period January to June. Nights spent by non-residents declined 6.04%, while those by residents dropped sharply by 19.16% in June.

Despite the drop in arrivals and accommodation nights, June showed some resilience with tourism revenue rising slightly by 0.2% to €423.1 million. Average expenditure per tourist increased 2% to €863.62, but the average stay shortened to 8.2 days from 8.5 a year earlier. Overall, tourism receipts for the first half declined 11.4% to €1.22 billion compared to €1.38 billion in 2025.

In contrast, many other EU countries reported growth in accommodation nights, including Malta (+9.91%), Slovakia (+5.86%), and Slovenia (+5.66%). Cyprus simultaneously experienced the second-largest increase in restaurant and accommodation service prices in June, rising 8.48%, indicating a complex tourism market environment amid falling demand.
