Cyprus police investigate Chinese official's son and friends in multimillion-euro money laundering case

Cyprus police are investigating Suchao Li, the son of executed Chinese Communist official Li Jianping, along with family friends Yuedong Cui and Meiji Cui, over alleged money laundering linked to the Cyprus Investment Programme. Authorities suspect the trio laundered funds embezzled by Li Jianping, who was executed in China in December 2024 for corruption involving over €426 million.

In August, police froze two properties in Limassol and Tsada worth a combined €17 million that are tied to the naturalised Cypriots under investigation. The suspects have not been located for service of legal orders, which were instead published as per Cypriot law.

The case arose after Interpol issued notices requesting cooperation, as Suchao Li is wanted in China for fraud offenses. Cyprus revoked his citizenship in 2022. Authorities are pursuing charges including money laundering, conspiracy to defraud, and obtaining citizenship by false pretenses. The probe highlights the broader challenges Cyprus faces regarding due diligence in its investment citizenship scheme.
