Parents Protest Over Extended Closure of Limassol Olympic Swimming Pool Demanding Swift Repairs
Parents of children training at the Limassol Olympic Swimming Pool staged a protest on Wednesday morning, demanding immediate repairs and reopening of the facility. The pool has been closed since August 30 due to damage caused by a downpour that affected part of its plant room, according to the Cyprus Sports Organisation (CSO). The pool is the only 50-metre facility in Limassol and serves around 800 swimmers and 400 water polo players from three clubs.
Parents expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of clear communication from CSO about repair progress and timelines. They emphasized that September is a crucial month for athlete preparation and recruitment, and the closure is severely impacting training. Currently, athletes are forced to use smaller 25-metre indoor pools with limited availability, causing difficulties such as late training sessions that extend until 10:40pm, affecting the students’ school and rest routines.
Dr. Ioannis Thrasyvoulou, a parent and water polo coach, warned there is no alternative plan if repairs are delayed beyond six weeks and urged the CSO and authorities to prioritize the repairs urgently. He noted that the technical expertise and parts needed for the plant room restoration should be attainable to resolve the issue promptly.
