Turkish Cypriot property service admits 150 million sqm land allocation to former staff member
The Turkish Cypriot property management service has acknowledged that over 150 million square metres of land were allocated to a former staff member about 30 years ago. The service emphasized that these allocations followed the procedures in place at the time and that the employee has since retired, retaining only 31,000 square metres for agricultural use. Following directives from Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou, all related contracts have been terminated in 2024.
In response to allegations made in the House refugee committee, the service stressed its zero-tolerance policy toward corruption and mismanagement. It reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and thorough investigation of any complaints supported by specific evidence. The service also criticized unsubstantiated public claims, urging for evidence-based inquiries to protect Turkish Cypriot property effectively.
Concerns have been raised about the management of Turkish Cypriot agricultural lands, particularly regarding non-refugee farmers cultivating the land and receiving subsidies without proper agreements. New regulations require written contracts for subsidy eligibility, with the risk of losing payments for non-compliance. Turkish Cypriot properties have been under state guardianship since the 1974 invasion, with allocation mainly to Greek Cypriot refugees, though some properties have been leased under specific conditions.
