Pro-federal CTP set for landslide victory in Turkish Cypriot legislative election, poll shows
The pro-federal solution party CTP is poised for a landslide victory in the upcoming Turkish Cypriot legislative election, likely scheduled for December 6. A recent poll by CMIRS shows the CTP leading with 47.3% support, more than double that of the second-placed UBP, which stands at 21.7%. If this result holds, CTP would secure 32 of the 50 seats, enabling it to form a government without coalition partners.
CTP leader Sila Usar Incirli is set to become the second female Turkish Cypriot prime minister and the first female party leader to win a majority in history. The ruling coalition partners UBP and DP currently hold 23 and 2 seats respectively, but are expected to lose ground. Other parties like TDP, YDP, DP, and HP lag behind, with the latter three unlikely to secure any seats.
The election date is to be finalized by a legislative vote on October 8. Meanwhile, legislative plans to abolish mixed voting—limiting voters to select candidates only from one party—have sparked debate. Former leader Tufan Erhurman criticized such last-minute changes as undermining democratic principles, but the ruling coalition intends to push through the reforms.
