Karaiskakio Foundation Registers Over 205,400 Bone Marrow Donors Marking World Marrow Donor Day
The Karaiskakio Foundation announced it currently has over 205,400 registered bone marrow donors and has facilitated more than 1,000 transplants across 36 countries. This milestone was shared on World Marrow Donor Day, celebrated internationally on September 22, recognizing the vital role donors play in giving patients with serious haematological diseases a chance at life.
This year's campaign, themed 'Hope Heroes,' encourages public participation in sharing stories of courage and generosity via social media hashtags #thankyoudonor, #WMDD26, and #HopeHero. The foundation is part of a global network represented by the World Marrow Donor Association, which includes over 44 million donors from 60 countries, highlighting the importance of international collaboration in matching donors and patients.
The Karaiskakio Foundation, which joined the association in 2000, stresses the ongoing need to expand its donor archive to reflect the genetic diversity of Cyprus. September is dedicated to raising awareness about leukemia and bone marrow donation through various awareness campaigns and activities organized by the foundation.
