Neapolis University professor warns AI risks include loss of human critical thinking

Professor Savvas A. Hadjichristofis of Neapolis University Paphos highlighted a key danger of artificial intelligence: society gradually losing confidence in its own decision-making abilities and becoming overly reliant on AI. He cautioned that the greater existential risk might not be AI turning against humanity but the "colonisation of human judgement" through uncritical trust in machines.

Hadjichristofis emphasized concerns raised by AI researchers who resigned from leading tech companies, warning of the rapid development of powerful tools controlled by a few firms. While calls for regulation and a slowdown in AI advancement exist, he noted potential conflicts of interest as companies could shape rules to maintain dominance.

He stressed the importance of AI literacy and education, urging that people—especially children—learn to question AI outputs and maintain critical thinking skills. Implementation of the EU AI Act could help, but ultimately, Hadjichristofis said, society must ensure AI serves as a tool to augment human thought rather than replace it.
