Cyprus Health Minister stresses importance of informing patients about cross-border healthcare rights
Cyprus Health Minister Neophytos Charalambides highlighted the critical need for patients to be adequately informed of their rights to seek medical treatment abroad, during a European Parliament event in Cyprus. He emphasized that for Cyprus, a small island nation, cross-border healthcare is a vital option for patients requiring specialized treatments not readily available domestically, especially for rare diseases.
Charalambides acknowledged ongoing development within Cyprus’s healthcare system but stressed that access to treatment abroad complements rather than replaces national services. He called for clear communication to patients about their rights, procedures, cost coverage, and available support, noting that awareness and accessibility are as important as the legal framework itself.
The minister also pointed to technological advances such as electronic prescriptions and secure sharing of health data as tools to facilitate care abroad. However, he warned that success should be measured by how efficiently patients can utilize these services, urging continuous feedback from patients to identify and address practical obstacles.
