Customs agents confiscated almost 5 kilograms of duty free nargileh tobacco during vehicle searches at Dherynia and Ayios Dhometios crossing points on Monday. At Dherynia, a Turkish Cypriot-driven vehicle carrying an Israeli passenger was stopped, and 7.4 kilograms of duty free nargileh tobacco were found in the passenger's luggage. The Israeli was arrested but later released after paying an out-of-court settlement of €2,600.
At Ayios Dhometios, agents stopped a Greek Cypriot driver, discovering 2.4 kilograms of duty free nargileh tobacco from Nepal in the car. The man’s vehicle was seized but later released following settlement payments totaling €1,000. The confiscated tobacco products from both locations are set for destruction, as per customs regulations.
