Cyprus doctors' names misused to promote unapproved wellness treatments, association president warns
Several well-known Cypriot doctors, including the president of the Cyprus Medical Association (CyMA), have had their names and photos exploited by opportunists to advertise unproven wellness and anti-ageing treatments. Many doctors were unaware their identities were being used, while some who work with certain centres complain that their names were invoked without consent to market unapproved therapies. This misuse gained traction following a surge in interest after the death of singer Giorgos Mazonakis.
Petros Agathangelou, CyMA president, confirmed his name was illicitly linked to intravenous drip therapies offered by a centre without his knowledge, prompting him to initiate legal action. He stressed the difficulty doctors face in preventing exploitation and advised colleagues to carefully vet their associations. Agathangelou also highlighted concerns over non-medical acupuncture and the misuse of terms like "aesthetic medicine" and "quantum medicine," urging clear distinctions and caution in these areas.
CyMA awaits the health ministry's investigation into all service providers, licensed or not, before taking further measures. The association vows to impose penalties on members knowingly involved in offering unapproved treatments outside accepted medical standards.
