Cyprus Lawyer Disbarred for Fraudulently Extracting €20,000 Claiming to Secure Friend’s Release

A Cyprus lawyer has been disbarred after the Disciplinary Board of Lawyers found he fraudulently obtained €20,000 from a man by falsely claiming he could secure the release of a friend allegedly arrested near the green line. This marks the strictest penalty, with the lawyer’s name struck off the Register of Lawyers and ordered to pay legal costs.

The lawyer was previously convicted in a criminal case and sentenced to two and a half years in prison. The disciplinary charges included obtaining money by false pretences, knowingly acquiring proceeds of illegal activity, and conspiracy. Exploiting his professional status, the lawyer reassured and misled the victim, even receiving partial payments as "expenses."

The Board highlighted that the conduct was a grave violation of legal ethics, profoundly damaging public trust in the profession. Given the seriousness and the lawyer’s prior disciplinary record, the Board deemed disbarment necessary to protect the public and uphold the integrity of the legal profession in Cyprus.
