Cyprus preps manufacturers for Europe’s tougher Cyber Resilience Act compliance
Cypriot manufacturers and software developers are now entering a demanding phase under Europe’s new Cyber Resilience Act (CRA), Research Deputy Minister Nicodemos Damianou said. The CRA requires security to be built into digital products from the design phase, making manufacturers responsible for their cybersecurity rather than customers. This change responds to growing risks demonstrated by past attacks, such as access gained through a smart thermometer in a casino’s fish tank.
Since September, companies must report actively exploited vulnerabilities and serious cybersecurity incidents, with full CRA compliance requirements coming into effect by December 2027. Damianou emphasized the challenge for smaller firms in Cyprus, many lacking dedicated compliance departments, to meet these obligations practically. To assist, European bodies are developing standards to provide a clear, unified path to compliance across the EU market.
Cyprus has prioritised cyber resilience during its EU Council Presidency and is strengthening national arrangements, including a new unified cybersecurity policy for the public sector. Damianou highlighted that the ultimate goal of the CRA is to build trustworthy, secure products for consumers, from high-tech items down to everyday objects like thermostats.
