Unauthorized construction ongoing at Trozena development within Natura 2000 protected area in Cyprus

Cyprus’s Department of Environment has identified extensive construction activities underway at the Trozena development without the necessary environmental and planning permits. The site falls within the “Cha Potami” Special Protection Area (SPA) of the Natura 2000 network, raising significant environmental concerns. Several sub-projects, including a restaurant and reception area, have already been completed or are near completion, despite the absence of approved permits.

The department has requested the submission of a general spatial master plan along with a Special Ecological Assessment Study (SEAS) covering all projects within the Trozena development. Six separate permit applications were submitted between 2023 and 2025, but investigations revealed additional unpermitted constructions, involving land leveling and vegetation clearance within the protected zone without prior environmental assessments.

To properly evaluate the environmental impact, the department demands an Environmental Impact Assessment Study (EIAS) for the overall development and an updated SEAS for all individual projects. These steps aim to ensure cumulative and comprehensive assessment of potential harm to the protected SPA before any further progress can be authorized.
