Children Propose Green Initiatives for Nicosia Neighbourhood During Laou Laou Open Streets Event

Children in Nicosia’s Ayioi Omoloyites participated in an event on Sunday to envision a greener and more welcoming neighbourhood. Organised under the Laou Laou Open Streets initiative and coordinated by European Climate Pact ambassador Eirini Andreou, the activity invited children to redesign their local streets using natural and recyclable materials. Their proposals included planting more trees, adding benches, and creating spaces for play, walking, and socialising.

The event aimed to foster discussions about public spaces and urban design by engaging young voices in climate action. Andreou highlighted the importance of listening to children’s ideas for greener, accessible neighbourhoods as part of the broader European Climate Pact, which seeks to bring climate initiatives closer to daily life. Laou Laou Open Streets coincided with European Mobility Week and temporarily transformed streets into vibrant community spaces.

The European Climate Pact, launched by the European Commission under the European Green Deal, encourages citizens and communities to contribute to sustainability efforts that support Europe’s goal of climate neutrality by 2050.
