Hourly-paid government workers threaten strike if talks with President are delayed

Hourly-paid government employees in Cyprus have issued a warning against any changes to the planned meeting with President Nikos Christodoulides next week, threatening strike action if the schedule is altered. The unions had agreed to postpone a strike initially set for last Thursday, following the President's commitment to engage with their representatives.

Trade union Pasykek-Peo emphasized that the suspension of strike measures was conditional, demanding substantive meetings with Finance Minister Makis Keravnos to negotiate improved wages and starting salaries. The union remains firm on maintaining the agreed timetable and their core demands for wage enhancements.

The Finance Ministry has stated that meeting these wage increases could cost taxpayers €23 million annually, noting that the median salary for hourly government staff is currently €2,113 per month, which is above the national median. However, union leaders highlight stagnant pay growth and low salaries for some workers, underscoring ongoing discontent within the workforce.
