Larnaca launches €18.3 million road upgrade including bus lanes, cycle paths and pedestrian crossings
Larnaca has commenced a major road improvement project costing 18.3 million euros, aimed at enhancing road safety, accessibility, and mobility. The works began on June 9, 2026, and are expected to conclude by August 2027. Funded by the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Facility under Cyprus’s Recovery and Resilience Plan, the project covers 11 major avenues, five secondary roads, including two in Aradippou, and eight local streets. Key features include the addition of 10.4 km of bus lanes, 22.3 km of cycle lanes, 13 km of pavements, and 182 pedestrian and cyclist crossings.
The project includes installations of new traffic lights, upgraded road signs, and infrastructure improvements such as sewerage and water supply works. Progress so far reports completed pavements, ramps, planters, and crossings on several streets, with ongoing works on major avenues including Faneromeni Avenue, where phased improvements are underway. The Larnaca district engineer noted minor adjustments are being made in response to occasional concerns, while the mayor emphasized the necessity of modern cycling and public transport provisions.
In addition to the road upgrades, two park and ride stations in Aradippou and Kalo Chorio costing 4.4 million euros are slated for completion by year-end. A separate but related 6.4 million euro Central Bus Station, serving urban and regional lines with direct airport connections, has also begun construction and is expected to be completed within a year.
