ICS Secretary General urges UN Security Council to protect free maritime navigation and seafarers in Strait of Hormuz
Thomas Kazakos, Secretary General of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), has called on the UN Security Council to ensure that commercial vessels and seafarers are not caught in geopolitical conflicts disrupting international waterways. Speaking at a meeting convened by Bahrain, Kazakos stressed the vital importance of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, a key maritime artery carrying about a quarter of global seaborne oil trade.
Kazakos highlighted the escalating security threats in the region, noting 80 attacks on shipping since late February, resulting in multiple seafarer casualties. He condemned proposals for compulsory tolls or restrictions on commercial ships transiting the strait, arguing that international law prohibits such measures and that shipping must not be used as leverage in political disputes.
Emphasizing the humanitarian dimension, Kazakos underscored that seafarers are civilians delivering essential goods worldwide and should not be endangered or politicized. The ICS remains committed to collaborating with governments and international bodies to protect maritime security and uphold the principles underpinning global trade.
