Cyprus Defence Minister Highlights Interoperability of Cyprus, Greece, and Israel Weapon Systems
Cyprus Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas stated that Cyprus, Greece, and Israel share the same weapon system, enhancing interoperability and significantly contributing to regional security. He emphasized that the bilateral Achilles Shield agreement currently exists only between Greece and Israel, with no immediate plans for Cyprus to join. Palmas highlighted the common challenge all three countries face in their strained relations with Turkey, noting daily tensions between Israel and Turkey and ongoing conflicts affecting Cyprus and Greece.
Speaking after signing a memorandum of cooperation with the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Palmas described Cyprus as a peaceful democracy under partial occupation, committed to maintaining strong deterrence on the island. He noted Cyprus's unique role in the region as the only EU member state in the Eastern Mediterranean and its ability to engage with regional rivals except Turkey.
Palmas also announced plans to upgrade the October 1 military parade, encouraging public attendance to witness new developments. He declined to comment further on a reported accident involving Egyptian grenades and a soldier from the Greek Force in Cyprus, citing ongoing legal proceedings.
