New photovoltaic plant powers Nicosia Sewage Treatment, covering 18% of energy needs
A new photovoltaic plant has been connected to the grid at the bicommunal Nicosia Sewage Treatment Plant in Mia Milia/Haspolat, expected to cover up to 18% of the plant’s annual electricity consumption. This 840 kW-capacity facility, consisting of about 1,860 solar panels, was funded with €1.6 million from the EU and implemented by the UNDP through the Local Infrastructure Mechanism.
Completed in August 2026 after nearly ten months of construction, the solar plant is estimated to produce around 1.6 million kWh annually. It will reduce the sewage plant’s reliance on external electricity and lower operating costs borne by the Turkish Cypriot community, while cutting carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 830 tonnes per year.
The sewage treatment facility, which serves most of Nicosia on both sides, already meets about 30% of its energy needs through on-site biogas. With the addition of solar power, a significant portion of the plant’s energy demand will come from renewable sources. Final system adjustments and inspection are underway before the project’s official handover.
