Cyprus Football Federation completes investigation into VAR incident during APOEL-AEL match
The Cyprus Football Federation has concluded its investigation regarding the VAR procedure during the APOEL vs AEL match in the 6th round of the Cyprus League by Stoiximan. The inquiry, conducted by the Refereeing Committee led by Antonio Damato, reviewed all available audiovisual material and relevant reports to assess adherence to the VAR Protocol and FIFA/IFAB guidelines.
The investigation identified specific findings related to how the incident came to the attention of the VAR team and the activation of the review process. It was clarified that according to VAR rules, the team can review incidents involving potential red-card offenses, including spitting, even after the match has resumed. The timing of the review was therefore not considered a violation.
As a result, the Refereeing Committee will take appropriate actions, including imposing sanctions where applicable and implementing procedural improvements to ensure full compliance with VAR protocols. The investigation did not question the correctness of the referee’s final decision following the On-Field Review, reiterating that spitting is a send-off offense under the Laws of the Game.
