House Finance Committee postpones decision on €146,000 upgrade for Photo Radar traffic cameras amid concerns
The House Finance Committee has deferred its decision on releasing €146,000 to upgrade the Photo Radar traffic camera system, citing unresolved questions about the efficiency and operation of the system. The proposed upgrade aims to enable Police to serve outstanding out-of-court fines to Turkish Cypriot vehicles at crossing points, with approximately 16,000 fines currently unserved. Discussions were held without Transport Ministry representatives, and concerns were raised by various parliamentary members regarding the justification for funding and the company’s performance. AKEL expressed unwillingness to support the funds if considered part of a revenue-raising strategy and criticized the Government for delays in addressing unserved fines and legislative amendments. ELAM highlighted issues regarding the legality and registration of Turkish Cypriot vehicles in government-controlled areas and questioned the effectiveness of the current system in reducing collisions. Direct Democracy Cyprus also criticized the high cost of the upgrade, suggesting that technical solutions to identify offenders could be implemented at a fraction of the proposed budget. The committee awaits further clarification before proceeding.
