Animal Party Criticizes BirdLife Cyprus for Skipping Protest Against Elam's Discussion on Environmental Activists
The Animal Party has sharply criticized BirdLife Cyprus for not participating in a protest against Elam's planned parliamentary discussion on environmental activists. The protest, held outside parliament on September 16, aimed to oppose a debate framed around restricting or controlling those identifying illegal activities like poaching. Animal Party leader Kyriacos Kyriacou said BirdLife Cyprus declined to join due to concerns about public image and expected turnout.
The Animal Party questioned BirdLife's absence, especially since 18 civil society organizations signed a joint letter addressing the issue. They emphasized that defending the environment and wildlife should not be judged by numbers and criticized BirdLife for not standing with other groups. The dispute intensified after BirdLife expressed frustration at not being invited to the environment committee meeting.
At the parliamentary session, criticisms surfaced from Akel MP Yiorgos Loukaides, accusing the committee chairman of unfairly targeting environmental organizations. Meanwhile, the Game Service chief stated that legal hunters felt "terrorised" by activist groups. The controversy highlights tensions between environmental advocates, lawmakers, and hunters regarding illegal bird trapping and activism.
