Italy’s Ambassador Downplays Turkish Threat to Cyprus' Cronos Gas Field, Highlights Growing Italy-Cyprus Cooperation
Italy’s Ambassador to Cyprus, Antonella Cavallari, has dismissed concerns over potential Turkish interference in the Cronos gas field, which is set to begin operations in Cypriot waters. She emphasized that the Cronos block lies entirely within Cyprus’s recognized Exclusive Economic Zone, minimizing risks of disruption. Other fields like Aphrodite and Glaucus remain at early development stages, with security more uncertain.
Ambassador Cavallari also detailed the ongoing strategic framework agreement between Italy and Cyprus aimed at deepening cooperation across economic, business, and defense sectors. She highlighted Italy’s recent support to Cyprus following the Akrotiri drone strike as part of European solidarity under the EU’s Article 42.7 mutual-assistance clause. Both countries are working to enhance structured engagement and promote shared interests.
The ambassador discussed the evolving Mediterranean focus within the EU agenda, the prospects of EU enlargement, and the Cyprus problem. She expressed optimism for UN-led negotiations supported by EU envoys, including experienced Italian representation.
