ECB highlights Cyprus challenge in shifting household wealth from cash to long-term investments

The European Central Bank (ECB) has identified a significant challenge in Cyprus, where households predominantly hold wealth in cash and low-yield deposits rather than long-term investments. The ECB reported that roughly one-third of euro area household financial assets, nearly €10 trillion, remain in low-interest holdings, with Cyprus notably lagging in encouraging capital market participation.

This reluctance is compounded by weak financial literacy in Cyprus, especially among young people. Central Bank of Cyprus governor Christodoulos Patsalides underscored the country's low rankings in financial knowledge, citing OECD data showing only 58.8% of youth have basic financial skills compared to 80.1% among middle-aged groups. The ECB emphasized that limited understanding and trust, along with perceived risks, deter many households from investing.

The ECB advocates for targeted measures including financial education, simplified investment products, and pension reforms to boost participation in capital markets. Patsalides has called for compulsory financial literacy courses in schools to prepare young Cypriots for complex saving and investment decisions increasingly driven by digital platforms. Enhanced participation could improve long-term returns and support economic growth across Cyprus and the wider euro area.
