Cyprus Police Rescue Over 100 Wild Birds from Illegal Trapping Nets in Larnaca
Police in Cyprus have rescued more than 100 wild birds caught in illegal trapping nets during a crackdown in the Larnaca district. The operation, conducted by the Poaching Prevention Unit of the Mobile Immediate Action Force (MMAD), uncovered three electronic devices that mimic bird calls and seven trapping nets containing 103 live birds, all of which were released back into the wild. Additionally, 12 dead birds were found at the scene. The area targeted by authorities is one where hunting is prohibited, highlighting the illegal nature of the activity.
The police are actively investigating the case, with the Kofinou regional police station working to identify those responsible for operating the trapping site. This operation is part of a broader effort by the police to combat illegal bird trapping, following a recent incident in Larnaca last week where a €13,500 fine was issued after 17 wild birds were caught in nets. The authorities continue to emphasize their commitment to wildlife protection in the region.
