ESMA warns of rising vulnerabilities amid stretched tech valuations and geopolitical tensions in EU markets

The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has issued a warning about increasing vulnerabilities in EU financial markets, driven by stretched technology valuations and heightened geopolitical tensions. While markets have shown resilience, the growing gap between deteriorating macro-financial conditions and optimistic market valuations raises the risk of sudden corrections if economic risks arise or investor sentiment shifts abruptly.

ESMA highlighted emerging risks related to frontier artificial intelligence and cybersecurity, alongside volatility in bond markets and interconnected areas like private credit and crypto-assets. Despite some market recoveries, concerns remain over inflation, weaker growth, and geopolitical conflicts, such as the Middle East crisis, which has also affected Cyprus through energy prices and tourism.

The regulator stressed that retail and institutional investors must remain vigilant and resilient, as elevated valuations do not eliminate underlying financial risks. ESMA’s report also pointed to evolving retail investment behaviour, risks from digital platforms, and continued strong interest in AI and sustainable finance sectors despite ongoing volatility.
