Cyprus underscored the importance of seafarers’ rights and the social role of shipping during a three-day maritime programme in Athens marking the 20th anniversary of the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC). Shipping Deputy Minister Marina Hadjimanolis emphasized that seafarers’ protection must evolve alongside new technologies and environmental regulations, describing the MLC as a living framework essential for humane, safe, and competitive shipping. Cyprus has incorporated the convention into national law, applying it as both a flag and port state.
The symposium highlighted Cyprus and Greece’s shared maritime heritage and collaboration on strengthening European shipping’s competitiveness and seafarers’ welfare. The discussions also addressed challenges such as attracting new talent, expanding women’s roles, digitalization, and meeting environmental targets. President Nikos Christodoulides noted Cyprus’ growing shipping registry and stressed the need for balanced international regulations that support industry viability while addressing decarbonization and geopolitical pressures.
