Cyprus Civil Defence clarifies preventive nature of Thursday’s CY-Alert amid widespread weather warnings
Cyprus’s Civil Defence has explained that Thursday's CY-Alert, which caused anxiety islandwide, was a preventive warning rather than an emergency alert. The notification warned of yellow-level risks and isolated intense storms primarily affecting the western half of Cyprus before spreading further. Despite no rainfall in some areas, severe weather had already impacted Akamas and Polis Chrysochous, prompting the early alert.
Civil Defence spokesman Panayiotis Liasidis clarified that the alert was a level 4 notification sent without the siren sound used for emergency alerts. The decision followed consultation with the Meteorological Department, and each weather event is assessed individually before activation. Some residents reported not receiving the alert, an issue linked to device settings or software, with authorities advising affected individuals to seek guidance.
The heaviest rainfall and storms impacted western coastal areas, including Kathikas and Larnaca, causing flight disruptions. Meteorological experts highlighted that warmer sea and land temperatures are intensifying storms, underscoring the need for Cyprus to build resilience against severe weather events exacerbated by climate change.
