Cyprus and New Jersey National Guard Seek to Broaden Defence Cooperation Under US Partnership Programme
Cyprus and the New Jersey National Guard are looking to expand their defence cooperation through the US State Partnership Programme (SPP), Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas announced on Friday. The two sides reviewed progress made so far and discussed future prospects during a meeting between Palmas and New Jersey Adjutant General Brigadier General Yvonne L Mays.
The partnership, established in 2022, has seen increased activity in 2024, including training Cypriot explosive ordnance disposal personnel in counter-IED operations and airbase recovery. Exchanges have also focused on cybersecurity, network security, and leadership development, with Cypriot personnel traveling to the US for further training.
Palmas thanked the New Jersey National Guard for strengthening the Cyprus National Guard's capabilities and reaffirmed the intention to deepen cooperation. The SPP, administered by the US National Guard Bureau, aims to develop long-term military and security ties by pairing US National Guard organisations with partner countries worldwide.
