Turkish Cypriot leader's undersecretary insists rotating presidency key to political equality in Cyprus talks
Mehmet Dana, undersecretary to Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman, emphasized that a rotating presidency between Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot communities is essential for political equality in a post-solution Cyprus. Dana stated that political equality forms the foundation for joint governance powers and is non-negotiable, criticizing past negotiation failures, including those at Crans-Montana in 2017, where political equality was a stumbling block.
Dana insisted that acceptance of political equality, including the rotating presidency principle, should precede renewed talks. This contrasts with the Greek Cypriot side, which argues political equality does not imply sovereign equality and believes that the presidency format should be negotiated during talks. The two sides also disagree over Turkish Cypriot proposals to guarantee the lifting of embargoes if negotiations fail again, with Greek Cypriot officials warning against predefined consequences that could hinder talks.
Both leaders, Nicos Christodoulides and Tufan Erhurman, plan to attend the UN high-level week in New York to discuss the Cyprus issue with Secretary-General António Guterres. These meetings highlight ongoing efforts to restart substantive negotiations despite profound disagreements over political equality and negotiation methodology.
