Cyprus urges enhanced skills renewal amid longer, diverse working lives
Labour Minister Marinos Mousiouttas emphasized the need for Cyprus to strengthen skills renewal as working lives become longer and more varied. Speaking at the Human Resource Development Authority's (Anad) annual meeting, he highlighted that continuous skill development is critical for employees to remain viable in the labour market until retirement.
Mousiouttas praised Anad for its role in boosting productivity and employment through vocational training, noting a €14 million budget supporting over 25,600 participations focused on digital and entrepreneurial skills. He stressed the importance of integrating artificial intelligence and new technologies while protecting labour rights and investing in appropriate training.
Despite progress, Cyprus still lags behind EU averages in vocational training participation, with 12% of adults engaged last year versus the EU's 13.7%, and only 25% of Cypriots seeking workplace education compared to the EU target of 60%. The minister noted ongoing efforts to improve training quality and measure its impact on employment and productivity.
