Turkey proceeds with natural gas pipeline to Cyprus despite international objections
Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz expressed confidence in Turkey's plan to build a natural gas pipeline linking itself to Cyprus during his recent visit to the island. He characterized opposition from Greek Cypriot officials and others as evidence that Turkey is on the right track, emphasizing Turkey’s commitment to supporting the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and enhancing the wellbeing of Turkish Cypriots. The pipeline project involves laying two parallel pipelines stretching 101 kilometers from Anamur in Turkey to the Teknecik power station near Kyrenia in Northern Cyprus, allowing bidirectional gas flow.
The Republic of Cyprus, however, strongly opposes the project, with its UN representative Maria Michael condemning it as a violation of international law and UN Security Council resolutions. She labeled the agreement between Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot authorities as illegal and without legal effect due to the status of the TRNC. Preparatory works including seismic surveys have already begun, intensifying tensions.
The European Union has also voiced concerns, with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas urging Turkey to respect Cyprus’ sovereignty. Despite the criticism, Turkish Cypriot leaders view the pipeline as a strategic, long-term investment that will benefit future generations.
