Cyprus Institute highlights sustainable energy storage as key to future energy needs
Stavros Malas, president of the Cyprus Institute, emphasized that neither diesel nor natural gas can meet Cyprus’ long-term energy demands. Speaking during a visit by Deputy Minister Nicodemos Damianou to the institute’s PROTEAS research facility, Malas stressed the urgency of developing sustainable energy storage solutions alongside renewable energy generation to avoid costly electricity production.
PROTEAS, described as a model for Cyprus’ energy future, is focused on testing renewable energy and storage technologies appropriate for the island’s geographic isolation. The facility specializes in concentrated solar thermal energy research under local climate conditions, aiming to advance efficient renewable systems for Cyprus and other sunny regions.
Deputy Minister Damianou highlighted PROTEAS as an example of Cyprus' potential to shift from energy consumer to innovator by attracting companies to develop cutting-edge energy solutions. The visit included briefings on research efforts addressing climate change and fostering innovation in renewable energy technologies.
