Cyprus to unveil Israeli-made Barak MX air defence system at Independence Day parade
Cyprus will publicly present its Israeli-made Barak MX air defence system for the first time during the Independence Day military parade on October 1, Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas confirmed. The event will highlight the National Guard’s latest acquisitions and is described as an upgraded parade to honor the occasion. Greece and Egypt will also participate, with high-level representatives and military contingents attending.
Ahead of the parade, Palmas is set to travel to Cairo for a trilateral meeting with his Greek and Egyptian counterparts to review and update military cooperation, particularly on exercises and training. The Defence Minister also addressed ongoing airspace tensions, including violations of the Nicosia flight information region by Turkish aircraft and related incidents, emphasizing a cautious approach to avoid escalation.
Renewal of the arms embargo lift on Cyprus will allow progress on modernization efforts such as the upgrade of the Andreas Papandreou air base in Paphos and acquisition of 40 Hummer military vehicles. Regular training and cooperation through bilateral and trilateral exercises, like the recent Medusa exercise with Greece and Egypt, remain a core element of Cyprus’s defense strategy.
