The opposition party DISY is experiencing internal friction following President Nikos Christodoulides’s appointment of senior MP Nikos Tornaritis as special envoy for the Cyprus problem in Asia and Africa. Georgiades expressed that he would personally decline such a government role while in opposition but still expects Tornaritis to support DISY’s chosen presidential candidate. Meanwhile, DISY leader Annita Demetriou urged party members to prioritize national unity ahead of critical developments concerning Cyprus’s reunification, emphasizing the party’s commitment to practical issues.
Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis defended the president’s cross-party appointment, citing historical precedents such as Glafcos Clerides appointing his rival in presidential elections, and highlighted similar recent appointments to support the move.
