Cyprus launches investigations into unlicensed anti-aging and wellness practitioners amid safety concerns
The Ministry of Health, the Police, and the Cyprus Medical Association (CyMA) have launched comprehensive investigations into registered doctors and unlicensed practitioners offering unverified anti-aging, wellness, and longevity treatments. The probes respond to rising public anxiety in Cyprus and Greece over unsafe medical and cosmetic procedures, including Botox, fillers, intravenous hormone therapies, and plasmapheresis.
CyMA Ethics Committee President Michalis Anastasiades emphasized that only evidence-based preventive care and recognized aesthetic procedures performed by qualified specialists are legitimate. He warned against misleading marketing language promoting pseudo-medical treatments lacking clinical documentation, cautioning that terms like "longevity" and "healthy aging" have been exploited. Health officials also highlighted the dangers of unregulated substances marketed as "natural" or "for research use only," which may pose risks of contamination and toxicity.
CyMA is reviewing complaints against members for administering treatments without proper medical indication and will investigate whether doctors' activities align with their specialized training and ethics. Anastasiades stressed that registered physicians bear legal and ethical responsibility, and disciplinary actions will be pursued against those involved in unscientific or illegal practices.
