Greece hopes for successful enlarged meeting on Cyprus problem amid ongoing talks
Greece, in full coordination with the Republic of Cyprus, aims for the next enlarged meeting on the Cyprus problem to be a success, President Constantine Tassoulas said during a welcoming event for Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides in Athens. The meeting, which would include the island’s two sides, Greece, Turkey, the UK, and the UN, remains unscheduled as key disagreements persist.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres ruled out holding the meeting during the upcoming UN high-level week, emphasizing the need for progress on confidence-building measures, methodology, and substantive issues. Despite multiple talks between Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman, significant progress has yet to be achieved, with disagreements over political equality and meeting methods.
Erhurman remains cautious about convening an enlarged meeting without tangible results, insisting that previous failures should not be repeated. He confirmed plans to meet Guterres in New York and expressed hope for positive developments, highlighting ongoing contacts and dialogue between the two sides as a basis for future progress.
