Substandard Asphalt on Paphos-Polis Road Section to Be Removed Amid Dispute
A 1.7-kilometre stretch of newly laid asphalt on the Paphos-Polis road in the Tsada area has been deemed substandard and must be torn up, the Public Works Department announced. The department blames the contractor for failing to comply with required inspections, while the contractor attributes the issues to design flaws and work instructions received during construction.
During a parliamentary Transport Committee session, MPs and local leaders expressed concerns about the road's uneven surface posing serious safety risks, especially during rainy weather. The contractor, Araco Construction Cy Limited, disputes responsibility for the surface irregularities, citing terrain constraints and the need for a new survey to rectify the problem.
The Public Works Department has given the contractor a 15-day deadline to respond with plans for repair, warning that if neglected, alternative measures will be taken to ensure safety. The project is currently 70% complete, with €54,400 already deducted for delays. Police have been urged to increase patrols and install warning signs to prevent accidents while the dispute continues.
