Key prosecution witness completes testimony in suspended Paphos mayor rape trial
A key prosecution witness has finished extensive testimony in the rape trial of suspended Paphos mayor Phedon Phedonos. The Permanent Criminal Court in Paphos adjourned proceedings until September 22 to allow the defence time to prepare for cross-examination. The witness's testimony, which began at the previous hearing, lasted several hours before the prosecution concluded its questioning.
The defence requested extra time to prepare their cross-examination, which the court granted. The prosecution's case, led by Senior Counsel Michaella Pasiardi, is reportedly about halfway through. Phedonos faces five serious charges, including rape, two counts of indecent assault, administering a substance to enable a criminal act, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. All charges relate to alleged offences from 2014, carrying potential life sentences if convicted. Phedonos denies all allegations.
