Cyprus ranks 2nd globally in healthcare availability satisfaction but access challenges remain

Cyprus secured second place internationally, after Switzerland, in a survey measuring satisfaction with healthcare service availability among General Health System (GHS) beneficiaries. The nationwide study, conducted by IMR/University of Nicosia in September 2026 with 1,000 participants, revealed that 75% of respondents were satisfied with access to health services, surpassing the 19-country average of 64%. Despite this, nearly one in three beneficiaries reported difficulties in accessing needed care.

The survey highlighted significant use of GHS services, with 95% visiting personal doctors and 86% seeing specialists in the past two years. Satisfaction with personal doctors reached 88%, while 31% of respondents faced challenges obtaining care, especially women and younger individuals. Waiting times remain an issue; 40% expressed dissatisfaction with specialist appointment wait times, though improvements have been noted compared to previous years.

Public attitudes have shifted towards higher expectations, emphasizing the need for shorter waiting times and expanded test coverage rather than questioning the GHS’s existence. About 55% of respondents prioritized reducing waiting times, and 46% sought broader coverage. The findings suggest Cyprus citizens see healthcare access as an established right and demand enhanced system efficiency and service scope.
