Brazilian couple to remain in custody over Kornos forest fire case
Two Brazilian nationals arrested for allegedly setting off fireworks that caused a fire in Kornos will stay in custody after Cyprus’ Court of Appeal unanimously upheld a detention order. The 27-year-old man and 29-year-old woman face serious charges including arson, attempted arson, causing a state forest fire, and conspiracy. They are scheduled to appear at Larnaca Criminal Court on October 21, 2026.
According to court evidence, the couple traveled to Kornos on August 2, 2026, purchased fireworks, and ignited them in a dry field, sparking the fire. Although passing motorists tried to extinguish the flames, the accused reportedly laughed and refused help. The Forestry Department highlighted the area's high fire risk due to dry vegetation and pine forests.
The courts determined that the defendants, who have lived in Cyprus for relatively short periods and have limited ties beyond employment and residence, pose a flight risk. Despite voluntarily appearing at a police station, this was deemed insufficient to eliminate the risk. The Court of Appeal found the detention order justified given the seriousness of the charges and potential penalty, rejecting all appeal grounds.
