Cyprus to submit social media age restriction bill to Parliament in December

Cyprus aims to submit a bill establishing a minimum age limit for social media use to the Parliament by December this year, announced Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, Dr. Nikodimos Damianou. The proposed legislation sets 15 years as the minimum age for accessing social media platforms and plans to incorporate an age verification mechanism into the Digital Citizen platform.

The bill emphasizes that social media platforms must implement appropriate mechanisms to verify users' ages without storing excessive personal data. Damianou noted that while other countries also set age limits, effective implementation by platforms is crucial. Cyprus is also following the European Commission's recently announced EU Kids Act and plans to align its provisions with the EU Age Verification Blueprint.

Consultations with citizens and targeted groups will precede the bill's submission. The Deputy Minister highlighted that the EU is collectively pushing for stronger age verification measures, signaling increasing international pressure on platforms to comply with such regulations.
