Cyprus MPs Warn of 'Ticking Time Bomb' in Waste Treatment Infrastructure
Cyprus officials and MPs have raised alarms over the country's waste treatment systems, describing facilities like the Pentakomo plant as a 'ticking time bomb.' Since government takeover from a private contractor in December 2023, efforts have been made to improve conditions, including 180 new contracts for upkeep, fire protection, and environmental compliance. However, challenges persist with outdated equipment and overflowing waste at key sites.
The Pentakomo plant serves Limassol and is undergoing a €62 million transitional upgrade focusing on biogas management, mechanical repairs, and odor control. Meanwhile, the Koshi plant—which covers Nicosia, Larnaca, and Famagusta—faces a planned €100 million contract for repairs and partial modernization, with tenders expected in 2027. Paphos district continues to rely on untreated landfill disposal.
Experts highlighted that Cyprus buries around 90% of its waste, far above official figures and EU targets, placing the country at risk of legal penalties for non-compliance with the Landfill Directive. Environmental groups criticized authorities for downplaying the crisis, warning that uncontrolled waste sites across the island constitute a serious ecological threat requiring urgent action.
