Cyprus Patients' Federation Calls for Stronger Health Service Safety Measures on World Patient Safety Day
On World Patient Safety Day, the Cyprus patients’ federation (Osak) emphasized the critical need for safety to be prioritized at every stage of healthcare across the health system. Osak highlighted recent developments underlining the importance of effective licensing, supervision, and adherence to scientific evidence in medical procedures to protect patient safety.
The federation welcomed the Cyprus health ministry’s initiative to map all health service providers and the Cyprus Medical Association’s plans to inspect facilities and address unsafe or unscientific practices. Osak stressed that patients should expect treatments from qualified professionals and urged caution with treatments lacking scientific support, although it maintained that the responsibility for ensuring safety lies with health authorities, not patients.
This call comes amid growing concerns following a cardiac arrest incident involving Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis after undergoing plasmapheresis in an unauthorized clinic. Health authorities in Cyprus have also filed complaints against a Larnaca medical centre allegedly offering the treatment illegally. The health ministry confirmed past complaints but clarified it can only close licensed facilities, leaving law enforcement to investigate further.
