Cyprus-Greece Tourism-Led Environmental Initiative Expands for Cross-Border Clean-Up in 2026
The environmental campaign 'Tourism Cares: Unite for Cleaner Destinations,' originally launched in Cyprus, is expanding to Greece in 2026. Scheduled for September 25, the initiative will unite tourism businesses, diving centres, local communities, and volunteers from both countries to conduct clean-up and awareness activities ahead of World Tourism Day on September 27. Nearly 100 organisations have already registered to participate.
The campaign focuses on reducing waste and promoting environmentally responsible behaviour in the tourism sector, with special emphasis on underwater clean-ups addressing marine pollution. Activities will take place across diverse natural sites, including beaches, coastlines, parks, forests, and seabeds. Organisers emphasize shared responsibility for protecting the Mediterranean Sea and aim to foster lasting behavioural changes among tourism workers, visitors, and locals.
Building on two years of success in Cyprus—where participation and waste collection steadily increased—the campaign marks its first joint effort with Greece. It is supported by key tourism and environmental organisations and endorses wider Mediterranean cooperation to address cross-border environmental challenges. Registrations remain open until September 21, 2026.
