Cyprus officials and shipowners emphasized the expanding role of women in the shipping industry and related social work during an event in Athens ahead of World Maritime Day. The "Women, Shipping, Social Contribution" gathering brought together key figures from Cyprus and Greece, highlighting that shipping goes beyond economic factors to include human and community support. Shipping Deputy Minister Marina Hadjimanolis stressed that women have not only contributed professionally but also through charitable foundations and family initiatives, helping to pave the way for future generations.

First Lady Philippa Karsera Christodoulides underscored shipping’s vital social role, noting its tradition of mutual support and its impact on education, healthcare, and culture in Cyprus and Greece. She shared her own experience of displacement, emphasizing education as an irreplaceable asset for vulnerable families. Meanwhile, Cyprus Union of Shipowners president Polys V. Hajioannou pointed out the historic reliance on mutual assistance at sea and the evolving presence of women working onboard ships, in ports, offices, and leadership roles.

The event reflected efforts to deepen collaboration between the Greek and Cypriot maritime sectors, with Hadjimanolis highlighting a cooperative approach that benefits both communities.
